Intravenous (IV) dental sedation is a highly effective method used to alleviate anxiety and discomfort during dental procedures. Administered through a vein, IV sedation induces a deep state of relaxation, allowing patients to remain calm and often unaware of the procedure. Unlike general anaesthesia, patients remain conscious but are less responsive to stress and pain.
IV sedation is closely monitored by trained professionals to ensure safety and comfort throughout your dental visit.
If you experience significant anxiety or fear about dental procedures, have a low pain threshold or sensitive gag reflex, or have difficulty achieving numbness with local anaesthesia, IV sedation may be a good option for you. It could also be beneficial if you require extensive or multiple dental treatments as it allows for longer procedures without discomfort.
It’s also suitable for patients with special needs or those who have had traumatic dental experiences in the past. By providing a deeply relaxed state, IV sedation ensures a stress-free, comfortable dental visit for those who need it most.
Yes, IV dental sedation is safe when administered by trained professionals. Throughout the procedure, the patient’s vital signs, including heart rate, blood pressure, and oxygen levels, are closely monitored to ensure safety.
During your treatment under sedation you will be cared for by two trained clinicians. The first clinician is responsible for your sedation and the second is responsible for your dental treatment. This combined approach ensures that the quality and safety of your care is of the highest standards. Using this approach also means that all types of dentistry can be carried out while you are sedated, from small routine treatments to longer more complex cases.
Most patients feel no pain during the procedure. IV sedation helps manage discomfort and anxiety, allowing for a virtually pain-free experience. Local anesthesia may also be used in conjunction to ensure complete numbness.
IV sedation takes effect rapidly, often within minutes. This quick onset allows the dentist to begin the procedure promptly, reducing overall treatment time and enhancing patient comfort.
The effects of IV sedation can last for several hours after the procedure. Patients may feel groggy and should arrange for someone to drive them home and stay with them until the effects wear off completely.
Patients are usually advised not to eat or drink for at least 6 hours before their appointment. Specific instructions will be provided by your dentist to ensure a safe and effective sedation experience.
After the procedure, patients may feel drowsy and should rest for the remainder of the day. It’s important to follow post-operative care instructions provided by the dentist and avoid driving or operating heavy machinery until fully alert.
Follow the pre-sedation instructions provided by your dentist, which may include fasting and arranging transportation. Wear comfortable clothing, and ensure your medical history is up-to-date for the dental team to review.
